Hangersley Hill

Project type

Architecture and Interior

Date

June 2022

Location

New Forest

Originally conceived as a music studio and annexe, this project evolved into a sustainable forest retreat focused on comfort and a strong connection to nature. Following the RIBA Plan of Work (Stages 0–7), the design process guided a thoughtful transformation from creative workspace to residential sanctuary.
In Stage 0 (Strategic Definition), the concept shifted to a purely residential annexe, optimised for relaxation and long-term use. Stage 1 reassessed spatial needs, acoustics, and materials to suit this new vision.
During Stages 2–3, designs were refined to enhance natural light, thermal efficiency, and use of local materials. An open-plan layout and large windows deepened the connection to the forest.
Stage 4 ensured technical compliance while maintaining sustainability goals. Stage 5 documented construction milestones, from foundations to timber cladding and interior finishes.
Now complete, the annexe serves as a tranquil retreat (Stages 6–7), blending harmoniously with its surroundings—a clear example of adaptive, sustainable design.
